Academic Standards

Independent Study
As a charter school, we are able to assign Independent Study (IS) to students who are away from their desks for as little as one day. State funding is dependent on the number of students literally in their seats every morning and those participating in IS. We lose revenue every day a child is absent.

Please help us keep our funding level at its maximum: If you know your child is going to be out for as little as one day, please follow the steps below. Added benefit: This will keep your child caught up with school work!

When You Know In Advance
-
Parents, please come into the office and pick up the Short Term Independent Study contract and the Independent Study Worksheet; both are found within the stacker next to the office door. Or you may also print out the form from the link above.
-
Parents, please inform the teacher of the date(s) your child will not be physically at school and give the teacher the IS Worksheet as well as the signed and dated Short Term IS contract. (Three day advance notice is appreciated, though we understand this is not always possible.)
-
Your child’s teacher will return to principal the signed Short Term IS contract. The teacher will retain the IS worksheet for her own records, ensuring she has all material ready before the student begins his or her IS contract. The IS worksheet and curriculum to be completed will be sent home with the student just prior to the start of the IS contract.
Out Due To Illness
-
While we don’t encourage sick kids at school, we also don’t want to lose even one dollar of possible funding.
-
The solution: If your child is out ill and you know your child will be out for multiple days, we ask that you please contact the office. If you are unable to stop by school, the office manager can arrange to fax or email the forms for you to sign and the coursework to you for days when your child may not be ready to be back at school, but is well enough to resume coursework.

Long Term Independent Study
Long term independent study is available with SFCS. If you are interested in pursuing such an option, please contact the office for more information. The teacher will retain the IS worksheet for her own records, ensuring she has all material ready before the student begins his or her IS contract. The IS worksheet and curriculum to be completed will be sent home with the student just prior to the start of the IS contract.
